Returning bundles

Choose whether a bundle has to come back whole or item by item, set a different answer for individual bundles, and see what shoppers are shown.

If you sell bundles, you need to decide what happens when a customer wants to send back only part of one. Someone buys a three-piece set for £90 and wants to return the top. Do they have to return the whole set? If not, what is the top worth?

You set this once for your store under Return Rules → Basics, in the bundles and promotions card. You can then override it for any single bundle.

The three options

Return the whole bundle. Every item in the bundle comes back together and the customer is refunded the bundle price. This is the default. It's the simplest and it protects your bundle discount.

Let shoppers return individual items. Each item can come back on its own. The refund is that item's share of the bundle price, not its full price.

Let shoppers return individual items and re-price what they keep. Each item can come back on its own, but if that breaks the bundle, the items the customer keeps go back to their normal price. The difference comes off the refund. The shopper sees the numbers before they submit, so there are no surprises later.

Here's that third option with the £90 set. Bought separately the three pieces would cost £40 each, £120 in total. The customer returns one piece. The two they keep are worth £80 at normal price, so the refund is £90 minus £80, which is £10. They had a discount for buying three and they're no longer buying three.

A different answer for one bundle

Under Bundles in your store the card lists every bundle it found. Each has a dropdown: Default, Whole bundle, Individual items, or Individual items, re-priced. Default follows your store setting.

A typical use: whole bundle only for gift sets, individual items for a "pick any 3 tees" bundle.

One item is the wrong size

Whole-bundle returns have one exception, because it comes up so often. If a bundle is set to come back whole and one piece doesn't fit, the shopper can choose One item is the wrong size, pick the piece and pick the new size. Only that piece is swapped. The rest of the bundle stays with them and the bundle price is kept.

It's one swap per return, and only for a different size or colour of the same product.

Good to know

  • Yoyo finds bundles made with the Shopify Bundles app, or any bundle app built on Shopify's bundles. They appear in the list without any setup.
  • If the list says no bundles were found but you do sell them, your bundle app probably creates them another way. Get in touch and tell us which app you use.
  • In the portal a bundle shows as one card with its items inside, so shoppers can see what belongs together.
  • Exchanging a size within a bundle never loses the customer their bundle saving.
